Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy is such a fascinating modality to me. It never ceases to amaze me the kind of experience people tell me they've had after we work together. I've had the most restless and sleepless folks fall asleep on the table, I've had people tell me their pain resolved and that they've never been so relaxed in their life. Craniosacral therapy has such an interesting way of working. It relies on using the the bones, the limbs, the tissues, and anything we can touch with our hands to go deeper into the body to work with structures normally thought of as untouchable. Through fascial connections from the skin all the way down to the spinal cord we can effect structures deeply and with respect. One example of this might be the sacrum. With a hand under the sacrum and using the craniosacral rhythm as a guide we can follow the sacrum into anterior or posterior motion and encourage it to go slightly further. This has a direct effect on the spinal cord as the Dural tube that surrounds it has an attachment site at the sacrum. As the spinal cord goes up into the head surrounded by this dura it also surrounds the brain and we can directly affect areas inside the head through that avenue. Another example might be the hyoid bone. This is a tiny little bone with so many muscle attachments yet no ligamentous attachments so it floats just between your Adam's Apple area and your jaw. Through this bone we can work on many structures such as the floor of the mandible, the root of the tongue, the trachea, the thyroid, and all of the other fascial connections that run through that area. So we're doing very deep work and making a lot of significant change on the body without any pain, discomfort, or big movements.
Craniosacral Therapy is a method in which the practitioner works toward balancing the body’s natural cranial rhythm. As cerebrospinal fluid is pumped through the spine, it creates a rhythmic motion that can be palpated and evaluated. This evaluation is based on where the rhythm is weak in amplitude, out of symmetry, or too fast or too slow. The craniosacral system is then treated using a light touch (the least amount of pressure necessary to do the work), working to release the connective tissue around the bones of the skull and spine. The technique can also be used anywhere on the body to release restrictions in the connective tissue to bring back rhythm there and to relieve any pain. Craniosacral Therapy seeks to locate and remove restrictions throughout the body’s systems. Corrections to these systems are addressed through light touch, time, energy and intention.
