Myofascial Release
I'm always looking to see patterns and things and with massage I love to look at what effects what. Meaning, as we work together in one area of the body I may notice it affects another area in the body or in other words as we work on your hamstrings, how does that affect your hip posture, or the way you hold your neck. For example the rib cage. If your ribs are pulling down to one side it may be indicated indicative of a tight psoas as it relates to it's tendinous and fascial connections to the diaphragm which then relates to the quadricep muscles in the leg. It could also be affected by the oblique muscles on one side, the scalenes up in the neck, or any other area of the body as things all come together to make a pattern of functional or dysfunctional posture and body movement. Another example might be headaches. This could be a trigger point referral up to the head from the trapezius muscle, the sternocleidomastoid muscle, or even the subscapularis muscle underneath the scapula. All of these areas would directly affect breathing rate as they affect the neck and if there's tension in the neck that could also affect the vagus nerve. So as we see here maybe you're getting headaches but maybe you're also having increased anxiety, pain in another areas of your body, mental and emotional stress, or anything else you might present with. As we release different structures in the body it's always interesting to see their patterns and see how and see what else becomes affected in a positive way. And headaches can also be a little tricky because you have to consider stress load on the mind due to environmental factors such as your job family etc, or it could simply be dehydration, poor nutrition, caffeine, drugs, or any of that. So as you can see we're not as simple as "I have a tight shoulder" or "I have a headache".
Myofascial Release is a process of engaging the fascia, strong connective tissue that runs throughout our entire bodies like a web. This fascia surrounds every muscle, muscle fiber, and down to the cellular level. Throughout our lives, whether through trauma or repetitive action, restrictions in the fascia can create a “sticking” to our movement, causing pain and effecting our daily lives. Releasing restrictions in these areas lets the body move in a fluid and balanced way, relieving discomfort.
This is more of a structural form of bodywork, with a heavy focus on pelvic balancing. As the fulcrum of the body, the hips must be balanced for any other bodywork to “hold”. If the hips go unbalanced, any work done in other areas can start to fade quickly, as the tensile nature of the body starts to pull it back out of balance. We work towards balancing the base so that what is stacked on top of it doesn’t tip!
Pressure can range from light to deep, with the hope of staying on the lighter side. Trauma that has been around a while can be painful and difficult to let go of. So it is with the body as well. Occasionally treatment can feel a little painful, but I always try use the least amount of pressure necessary.
